A Man’s View on Twilight

amberhubbyunicornAre you ready? My dear, sweet husband has offered some guy’s insight to Twilight. As you all know, he has been reading the series and was a featured unicorn on Letters to Twilight. And, wow, he really has some great thoughts. But hey, you aren’t here to hear me talk, so now, the man of the hour, my first ever guest blogger… TheShagDaddy.

Three books down and only one to go, but f*ck sake does it have to be so much thicker than the others? I would have waited until the entire saga was before doing this blog for Amber but I feel I won’t read it as fast at New Moon and Eclipse. Amber tells me that the Twilight/Twitter world wants a guy’s point of view on all this craziness known as Bella. I will do my best to oblige to the request but seeing as I have never blogged at all before who knows how this will go.

Let me start by saying that I watched the movie before reading the books, I have always hated the idea of being one of those people who are like ‘Hey that’s not how it went in the book!’. Okay, so I actually saw the movie three or fourteen times before reading the book (can’t get enough of that Kristen Stewart) but the real reason for reading Twilight was to mess with the wife. I figured I could learn some things that weren’t in the movie and when we discuss the movie I could sound super in tuned to the plot and picked up on things that only true Twilighters would know. I was able to get a shocked expression a couple of times and I think she was getting wise to me, but she probably just thought I was getting info off the net.  I will say it wasn’t easy to secretly read the book, because I didn’t want the book to come up missing by taking it to work so I would read it a little bit at a time while Amber was playing Guitar Hero. What made it hard is that our 3 year son would see me reading Twilight and yell ‘ THAT’S MOMMY’S BOOK!!‘ and I would quickly hide under the chair in case she heard him but amazingly she never did. Finally, I realized if I admitted what I was doing that it might increase my odds of getting laid and I still feel like that’s true. However, after telling Amber I was reading Twilight she got overly excited because we would be able to talk so much more about the book than we could about the movie.  Great, that’s what I wanted..to talk to the wife. But honestly I got hooked on Bella and Edward pretty quick and finally had to take the book to work just to get extra reading time in. I’ll tell you that it wasn’t easy to bring a book to a production shop filled with guys who only knew that teenie boppers read the book. But I told them the reason and they laughed but left me alone for the most part.

More hubby goodness, including his rants on the movie vs. the book after the jump!

I couldn’t  believe how much was changed in the movie or just left out altogether from the book. Fantastic, I instantly turned into that guy, but come on don’t you think it was important to know that James knew Alice and that’s part of why he wanted Bella so badly or that Rosalie’s bitchy line in the clearing about being able to smell Bella from across the field was said by Alice in a more concerned tone? And holy geez-a-loo could the meadow scene be any more wrong, I mean she revealed everything she knew after Edward saved her in Port Angeles but who gives a shit Catherine Hardwicke let’s just rearrange it and make the meadow scene more intense than needed instead of it being a connection moment between Bella and Edward. Hell, you know all the things that were wrong with movie, so let me tell you that Twilight is probably the most descriptive book I have ever read and it draws me in to a point that I feel the pain, love, sorrow and every emotion Bella lets out. I tend to feel like a woman the way I can get so lost in the story and mesmerized by Edward (dazzled if you will). Twilight just reminds me of the way I felt about love and life when I was in high school.

Team Edward was definitely the way I was feeling when I finished Twilight, but then I started New Moon. I am not ashamed to admit that after Edward left Bella, telling her that he did not want her, that I calmly closed the book and threw it across the room stating that this is all bullshit and I was not going to read any more of this filth. I pouted and bitched and complained that this was not right in any way for about 45 minutes but I was told that I had to drudge on and get past what a dick Edward is. At this point I really get learn about Jacob, what a great guy stepping in, being there for Bella, loving her even if the feeling wasn’t mutual, and just making her happy all around. Go, Team Jacob!! or so I thought.

For my hubby, a little bit of eye candy to tempt you to leave comments!

For my hubby, a little bit of eye candy to tempt you to leave comments!

Believe me, he is not done and has PLENTY more to say! This will not be the last you see of my own personal unicorn…

By the way, TheShagDaddy (yes, that is the screen name he chose) has also said he will get on and answer comments! He doesn’t have access to Internet at work (I know, how does he survive?), but he will get on here tomorrow evening if you’d like to visit. Oh, and let’s try and get him on Twitter, too. Cause that would just be hilarious (or my worse nightmare!).

My husband actually read the books before I did. He went out and bought the movie when I was talking about how “I would never watch that”. Now I’m hooked. It’s the first book series I have ever finished.

My husband got me in to Twilight. I’m proud of him. :)

Dear unicorn hubby: I want to clone you. Please submit blood sample.

In all seriousiness, I love having a man’s perspective to the books. I also read the books after having seen the movie, but it was in the theatre and I waited a couple of months before I started. Do you feel the actors they cast in the roles now meet your expectations? Have you started to picture the characters differently? What other scenes do you wish made it into the movie? Do you feel like Edward’s so-called apology at the end of New Moon was crap? I felt like he turned it around back on Bella for believing him. I’m still pissed about that one.

    Can’t wait for part 2!

As far as the actors go, I thought Billy Burke was better than I thought Charlie could be. Thought everyone else pretty well fit too in Twilight, but after reading New Moon I totally pictured Jacob different. I picture Jacob as a big jerkoff and I don’t see Taylor portraying it that way.

I wish they had more of the Tyler prom stuff just for humorous reasons. Oh and the airport scene. They should have had her get away from them like she did in the book.

Yeah, when he left her he was trying to do the guy thing and make her break up with him and when that didn’t work he tried to blame her for that not working.

      • Brooke Lockart

Billy as Charlie is pretty amazing and brings some needed life to the character. Supposedly Taylor really beefed up for New Moon and I may have seen some of those shots, but i cannot share my thoughts for fear of CH (ask Amber, she knows).

Yes, Tyler, the blood testing scene, all great humorous stuff missing.

Okay – I’m off for the evening! keep up the posts!

After I won the trip to LA to see the premiere and meet Rob and drug my husband along with me, He decided to try and read the book. He got to where Bella receives the truck from Charlie and put it down saying “I will just watch the movies”. I am still trying to get him to read them.

    Can’t wait for part two!

OMG!!! hahaha i looooooove the whole thing hehehe!! finally a man’s point of view about the whole thing, and we Twilighters absolutely thank you for reading the saga (almost finish)!! i hope your are enjoying your journey hehehe!!! well yeah u gotta talk to her, i mean wth?? she just found someone to talk about Twilight 24/7 hahahaha, i know i would ramble a looooooot with a person near me that has read Twilight, i mean c’mon, it’s an obsession… but i’m sure that won’t be the only thing u’ll be doing, i think rewards will be on the way for u.. hahahah
we all got either pissed or sad when Edward!! i mean c’mon, she was right in believing that maybe all the perfection wasn’t meant for her, and it still was stupid hehehe!! i dunno i’m Team Edward all the way, but yeah Jacob was the one that got Bella “back together”….
i still can’ wait for the secong part, it’s awesome… i’ll be waiting…
    gcgonc!! xD

“I calmly closed the book and threw it across the room stating that this is all bullshit and I was not going to read any more of this filth. I pouted and bitched and complained that this was not right in any way for about 45 minutes but I was told that I had to drudge on and get past what a dick Edward is” ————> I remember when that happened!!!

I was laughing so hard at that reaction, I was crying! I believe you said something about how can someone keep reading after being hurt so deeply. lol I even sent you messages through Amber to convince you to keep reading.

I’m glad you did, because so far your review represents almost exactly the way I feel, except for the part where you threw the book (Although I did that at some point while reading the 4th one and I still haven’t forgive Stephenie for a certain part of the book…you’ll see).

And the meadow? In the movie it appears as an aggressive scene and in the book I believe it was exactly the opposite.
And the sparkling sounds?? Seriously? How cheesy, didn’t you think?

Hugs from Chile, my dear TheShadDaddy and Amber!!

    • TheShagDaddy

I totally agree with the meadow. It was more confrontational then it needed to be. I felt that the meadow should have been a sanctuary for the 2 of them.

On the sparkle effects, I’ve heard wind chimes more convincing.

I love that your hubby read the books. I got my husband to watch the movie twice so far, and he really liked it. I kept having to pause and explain things. I keep saying, “just read the book!” I know when we go see New Moon in the theater he is going to have more questions so I really want him to read the book before hand.
I’ve been telling him how your husband has been reading the books and now I’m going to have my husband read his blog so I hope “The Shag Daddy” (lol) keeps writing..

  • amy

Love hearing the guys perspective on this. Wish I could get my husband to read it!!! We just got back from the beach trip with our whold family and my 2 brothers and their wives have all read it so I was in heaven. Keep up with the comments…..

  • Janetrigs

I’m late I’m late, forgot to read this blog at work, seeing as how I was at work doing work, then I got home and fell asleep on the couch and well now, your wife just reminded the Twitter World to read your awesome blog.

Well, 1st let me say I appreciate the man’s insight. Interesting to get most anyone’s take on the book, much less a unicorn!
2nd I was dissapointed that I did not see more cussing. As your wife can tell you, I tend to throw out the ocassional curse hear or there (or always). Like, Fuckery, or Fucking Balls of a Goat. I wanted to hear more of “WTF was wrong with fucking Edward?” But whateves. Your view was inciteful. (sp?)
    PS I also can’t spell!

Nonetheless, I can’t wait to see your depiction and reaction to the rest of the story. Esp the tent scene in Eclipse and all the fuckery in Breaking Dawn (by far my least fav). Anyhow, toodles. Can’t wait to see more.

    • TheShagDaddy

Holy fuck nuggets. I didn’t think any of you would want to hear an assclown cussing all the time cause I’d come across as some kind of fucking douche canoe. Sorry to fucking disappoint you.

      • Dany

Yes, now that Janet pointed that out, I’m looking forward to read the second post with more cursing included. Even though my first language isn’t English, the popular opinion is that apparently I curse like a sailor both in English and Spanish, so please do not restrain yourself in that area! lol

      • LadyChery

I would love to hear your opinion on Midnight Sun. It is the Twilight book but from Edward’s perspective. I read it off of Stephenie Meyer’s website. My husband refuses to read the books, but he expects me to tell him everything that goes on in the book.

  • Li Li

    Dear TheShagDaddy,

Umm…I am totally <3ing you for this:

"I calmly closed the book and threw it across the room stating that this is all bullshit and I was not going to read any more of this filth."

LMAO!!! Please, please keep posting here…I am digging the guys view!

PS– I wish that they would have put in Jasper's line of "You're wrong" when Bella feels like she isn't worth everyone risking themselves for her. I so loved that part in the book!

  • Gio

omg! thats everything i felt!! cause i did the same…u know…watching the movie like 13 times and theeeen reading the book, n when i finished reading it…i was like oh f*ck u katherine hardwick…whatta heck did u do??!!! that whole James n Alice thing was soooo important!! n the meadow!! common!! that pbbly the BEST part of the book…i get the chills just to think about it!! the dialogs r all messed up! n also i would have reaaally wanted Edward to be a lil more romantic…cause, lets face it., compared to the book, the movie edward its an effin rock!! the most romantic thing he ever says to her is: “u r my life now” oooooh i’m melting! (insert sarcasm) she just did whatever she wanted to do with the movie….gee!! i was sooooooo angry!! but then i got over it :D or i think i did :/

  • Gio

gee i hate my pic!! it looks too desperate…lol
oh n i agree with Jane…i would love to see more cursing next time! :D

  • Myrna

Actually I was surprised at how much my husband liked the movie!! He is too lazy though, to read the books. Instead he just questions me and is actually super interested in my conversations with him about the book, and how that version is soooo much better. Maybe in time, when the saga is finished, he will have the urge to pick up the books and find the differences’ himself. As much as I LOVE the book, I gotta give credit to Rob P. for bringing Edward to life for us, he did a wonderful job and “dazzled” myself and maybe even my husband just a touch!! It reminds everyone of first love or the beginning of a hot & heavy relationship. Also great job done by Kristen, even though its not hard to play a normal girl who falls for the charming hunk, she did a good job and has everyone wondering if the chemistry has led to something else possibly?? All characters were well portrayed, and even though I too thought some of the key moments were cut out or changed, I really enjoyed it and can’t wait to watch the rest of the saga.

  • austinmamadrama

Oh Mr. TheShagDaddy, I’m SO PROUD of you! Thank you for taking an interest in what your wife loves. My husband has started the Sookie Stackhouse series b/c he has a crush on Anna Paquin, and because there are sex scenes in the book. I, however, have failed at getting him to read Twilight. What he doesn’t know is, that he’d be MUCH better off if he did…if ya know what i mean! Keep blogging ShagDaddy!

  • austinmamadrama

ok, by the way, i’m DYING to know where that dress came from in the pic of Kristin above. LOVE IT! Want that dress!! (and her hair, but that’s beside the point)
