Are you ready? My dear, sweet husband has offered some guy’s insight to Twilight. As you all know, he has been reading the series and was a featured unicorn on Letters to Twilight. And, wow, he really has some great thoughts. But hey, you aren’t here to hear me talk, so now, the man of the hour, my first ever guest blogger… TheShagDaddy.
Three books down and only one to go, but f*ck sake does it have to be so much thicker than the others? I would have waited until the entire saga was before doing this blog for Amber but I feel I won’t read it as fast at New Moon and Eclipse. Amber tells me that the Twilight/Twitter world wants a guy’s point of view on all this craziness known as Bella. I will do my best to oblige to the request but seeing as I have never blogged at all before who knows how this will go.
Let me start by saying that I watched the movie before reading the books, I have always hated the idea of being one of those people who are like ‘Hey that’s not how it went in the book!’. Okay, so I actually saw the movie three or fourteen times before reading the book (can’t get enough of that Kristen Stewart) but the real reason for reading Twilight was to mess with the wife. I figured I could learn some things that weren’t in the movie and when we discuss the movie I could sound super in tuned to the plot and picked up on things that only true Twilighters would know. I was able to get a shocked expression a couple of times and I think she was getting wise to me, but she probably just thought I was getting info off the net. I will say it wasn’t easy to secretly read the book, because I didn’t want the book to come up missing by taking it to work so I would read it a little bit at a time while Amber was playing Guitar Hero. What made it hard is that our 3 year son would see me reading Twilight and yell ‘ THAT’S MOMMY’S BOOK!!‘ and I would quickly hide under the chair in case she heard him but amazingly she never did. Finally, I realized if I admitted what I was doing that it might increase my odds of getting laid and I still feel like that’s true. However, after telling Amber I was reading Twilight she got overly excited because we would be able to talk so much more about the book than we could about the movie. Great, that’s what I wanted..to talk to the wife. But honestly I got hooked on Bella and Edward pretty quick and finally had to take the book to work just to get extra reading time in. I’ll tell you that it wasn’t easy to bring a book to a production shop filled with guys who only knew that teenie boppers read the book. But I told them the reason and they laughed but left me alone for the most part.
More hubby goodness, including his rants on the movie vs. the book after the jump!
I couldn’t believe how much was changed in the movie or just left out altogether from the book. Fantastic, I instantly turned into that guy, but come on don’t you think it was important to know that James knew Alice and that’s part of why he wanted Bella so badly or that Rosalie’s bitchy line in the clearing about being able to smell Bella from across the field was said by Alice in a more concerned tone? And holy geez-a-loo could the meadow scene be any more wrong, I mean she revealed everything she knew after Edward saved her in Port Angeles but who gives a shit Catherine Hardwicke let’s just rearrange it and make the meadow scene more intense than needed instead of it being a connection moment between Bella and Edward. Hell, you know all the things that were wrong with movie, so let me tell you that Twilight is probably the most descriptive book I have ever read and it draws me in to a point that I feel the pain, love, sorrow and every emotion Bella lets out. I tend to feel like a woman the way I can get so lost in the story and mesmerized by Edward (dazzled if you will). Twilight just reminds me of the way I felt about love and life when I was in high school.
Team Edward was definitely the way I was feeling when I finished Twilight, but then I started New Moon. I am not ashamed to admit that after Edward left Bella, telling her that he did not want her, that I calmly closed the book and threw it across the room stating that this is all bullshit and I was not going to read any more of this filth. I pouted and bitched and complained that this was not right in any way for about 45 minutes but I was told that I had to drudge on and get past what a dick Edward is. At this point I really get learn about Jacob, what a great guy stepping in, being there for Bella, loving her even if the feeling wasn’t mutual, and just making her happy all around. Go, Team Jacob!! or so I thought.
Believe me, he is not done and has PLENTY more to say! This will not be the last you see of my own personal unicorn…
By the way, TheShagDaddy (yes, that is the screen name he chose) has also said he will get on and answer comments! He doesn’t have access to Internet at work (I know, how does he survive?), but he will get on here tomorrow evening if you’d like to visit. Oh, and let’s try and get him on Twitter, too. Cause that would just be hilarious (or my worse nightmare!).

OMG. He’s a freakin’ girl! I love him. Does he have a brother? Oh… right. I’m married. Dammit.
I wish my husband would read Twilight (and get it) so I could explain to him the draw. Since that’s not going to happen, can live vicariously through you, Amber? It’s the closest I’ll get to having that. Please?
June 26th, 2009 at 12:31 am
Oh wow!!! The passion!!! If only my hubby would get half as passionate about my obsession. I cant wait to read more of his side.
June 26th, 2009 at 12:33 am
What a wonderful husband!
June 26th, 2009 at 12:48 am
I wish my hubby would read it too!! He SAYS he will, but he always seems to have some other book that he’s just started…Maybe if I tell him his chances of getting laid will increase he’d read it.
Thanks for the idea!!
Great Post I look forward to hearing the rest.
~P.S. I’m team Jacob. Edward lost me when he left her in the woods too.
June 26th, 2009 at 8:25 am
Please note, he said he was Team Jacob, or so he thought? Spoiler alert! He switches back!!
June 26th, 2009 at 6:05 pm
Aren’t we all Team Jacob at some point? And then switch back or not.
Love your “daddy” ‘s blog.
June 27th, 2009 at 12:16 am
Edward can have Bella they work good together…I’ve just always had a soft spot for the best friend type.
I’ll take Jacob (and Taylor ain’t half bad either!)
June 26th, 2009 at 1:01 am
You’ve got yourself a winner, Amber! Make him a regular if he’ll sit still that long heehee…..thanks, waiting for the next installment
June 26th, 2009 at 1:17 am
I have to say that I had a good giggle at the screen name “TheShagDaddy.”
Besides that, it’s really nice to see a guy reading (and appreciating) TW!
You’re a lucky lady! I can’t wait to read his thoughts on Renesmee! lol
June 26th, 2009 at 8:26 am
Shhhhhh… No Breaking Dawn spoilers!
June 27th, 2009 at 5:08 am
Whoopsy! At least I didn’t say who that was…right??? lol
June 26th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Great. Now you ruined Breaking Dawn and I don’t even want to read it.
It doesn’t matter. I’m always wrong.
June 26th, 2009 at 1:17 am
oh that is sweet he really is getting into the blog isn’t he! lol! My husband has watched twilight with me 3 times and is keen to watch it again but it is based on 2 things!
1. He thinks he will get laid every time we watch it – i called him on this last night and quote he says “can’t I just want to watch a movie with you without it becoming about me wanting sex” – yeah right!
2. He fancies himself as a bit of an “edward” whenever edward is being his dashing self he loves to tell me that he does all those things for me – like when on our first date 100 years ago!!
Plus i think he has a man crush on edward as well!
But I have NO chance to get him to read the books! So well done to you ShagDaddy (seriously dude that name is hysterical!).
Two questions for you:
1. Were you sexually frustrated whilst reading these?
2. Do you have a mancrush on edward?
June 26th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I wasn’t sexually frustrated, but I enjoyed the sexual tension. But only between Edward and Bella, NOT Bella and Jacob.
On Edward, yes. On Rob, no, because he will never replace my Johnny Depp. But if something were to happen to Johnny, I think he could slide in.
June 26th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
lol you are too cute!!! we look forward to your next blog
June 26th, 2009 at 1:54 am
Awe, I’m proud of you. You stepped out of the Twilight closet loud and proud. Do you wear an Edward t-shirt to bed? That could get you more action as well *wink wink*.
I agree with you 100 percent, Twilight was a MAJOR f*ck up! The only thing I like (apart from the beauty of the Cullens and Edward… yum) was the colour and style. The screen with the blue hue. Anyways… EVERYTHING was wrong… they couldn’t even make the prom dresses the same colour. HOW HARD IT THAT? The movie lost alot of what makes us fall for Bella and Edward.
But what did you think of KStew?
I thought she was an aweful Bella. The attitude and personality. Just, I hope she’s better in the 2nd.
Eclipse wise… doesn’t it tear you up… caring for both Edward and Jacob. They want the best for Bella, but don’t know what that is. I talked to Amber and wondered if when Bella runs from school and jumps on the motorcycle with Jacob pissed you off?
AND… how excited are you now for November 20th???
June 26th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
I will agree that I thought the tone of the movie was awesome with the blue because it made you keep the feeling of the vampires, whilst with the New Moon trailer with the orange you can tell that its to make the werewolves shine. Like a hot versus cold thing.
As far as Kristen Stewart, yeah, her blinking and stuff bothered me, but after seeing her in other movies like Speak, Adventureland and the Messengers, she can play angst really well.
The motorcycle scene pissed me off not so much because she was betraying Edward, but because she was hurting Alice.,
On November 20, let me put it this way. I do have a countdown on my iPhone.
June 26th, 2009 at 6:14 am
Glad to see a man give reading a chance. My 31 year old son likes to read (as in the Reader’s Digest tucked in the bathroom), but wouldn’t go so far as to pick up a book and find a quiet corner of the house to expand his mind by actually letting someone see him read. To his credit, he reluctantly watched Twilight and actually liked it. However, I doubt we will see him in the theaters to see New Moon.
June 26th, 2009 at 7:03 am
omg! i think i’m in love! my hubby wont touch the books. he says they are 4 teens and moms with nothing 2 do! but that was great! he did such a great job! i can’t wait 4 more!
June 26th, 2009 at 7:06 am
I think TheShagDaddy is so cool! You are very lucky wife Amber even though at first he read it just to get at the wife (that made me laugh so hard), the fact that he did it is way so awesome.
A warning for Amber, now that you’ve exposed your hubby as a cool Twidad, you better be prepared when die-hard fans grab at him the Rpatz way….lol.
I’ll be waiting for more man’s view so keep on reading TheShagDaddy!
June 26th, 2009 at 8:27 am
Good thing I know how to cutabitch! Bring it on crazy skank ho fans!!
June 26th, 2009 at 7:10 am
What a nice hubby you have to read the books (even if it is partially to get more action;) Mine won’t even consider it. And I can see the draw of Kstew when she looks like that. Maybe I need to get my husband to be hot for her and then he’ll get into it? Hmmm….
June 26th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
It does make a difference.
June 26th, 2009 at 7:11 am
is that it?is that really how you let it end ……or so i thought! screams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 26th, 2009 at 7:16 am
I now have my own suspicians about my husband and my Twilight book! I must get down to the bottom of this! It is so exciting to hear a man’s point of view and know they didn’t find it cheesy. And how impressive is it that you read it in front of the guys at work?
I do have to ask, did you sympathize at all with the fact that Edward left Bella to keep her safe, or so he thought? I always thought that was kind of a guy thing. The ‘I’m no good for you’ kind of thing. I still cry at that part and I will probably fall apart when I see it in the movie.
I can’t wait for more of your review. Don’t throw Breaking Dawn while you’re reading it, that thing could kill somebody!
Come back to Team Edward!
And Amber, he’s defs a keeper! But I’m sure you already know that!
June 26th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
The way he did it was the guy way. “I’ll push you away first so it’s not my fault we broke up.” That’s the way guys do it.
And I still don’t sympathize with Edward. It was still a dick move. I thought there was no depth to his love for Bella and to think that he couldn’t protect her shows there was.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
“The way he did it was the guy way. “I’ll push you away first so it’s not my fault we broke up.” That’s the way guys do it.”
Really? And I almost thought guys are chivalrous by nature and now you’re telling us guys just don’t want the blame. Holycrap, my ex did that & I got insane thinking its my fault!
Very useful info TheShagDad, thanks.
June 26th, 2009 at 7:16 am
“…it draws me in to a point that I feel the pain, love, sorrow and every emotion Bella lets out.”
And there it is; exactly what I wanted to know.
Dear Amber,
I <3 your husband, but I've already told you that… many times.
Love,
Me.
Dear Amber's Husband,
I refuse to call you that horrendous screen name you picked, but – I <3 you!
Hugs (bc saying 'love' just feels wrong),
Jess
PS – Just so you know, I woke up 15 minutes early so I would have time to read & comment on this. True story.
June 26th, 2009 at 7:21 am
Wow..absolutely love this.. what a great guy you have Amber… I do believe if anyone picks up the book and gives it a chance, they will also feel this way. My husband is just pissed off and jealous (not happy at all) that I read Twilight over and over.. thinks that I have a weird obsession and does not get it at all…hoping that he will come around some day..
Can;t wait to read more..thx for sharing
June 26th, 2009 at 7:28 am
srsly heart you and your hubby!!
freakin legend-waitforit-ary!!!!
June 26th, 2009 at 8:28 am
And you win the award for the comment my hubby will love!! Seriously, anyone who busts out some NPH is okay in his book!
June 26th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
I totally agree with what you said.
June 26th, 2009 at 8:37 am
I lurve how he dogs the movie hehehe we all did!
Great post can’t wait for part 2 <3
June 26th, 2009 at 8:44 am
Wow Amber – you are lucky! My husband REFUSES to even watch the movie! Yet he got all pissed when I didn’t come running so he could show me the beta version of Windows 7 he installed on his play PC. (He’s not really a geek – just, well, yeah, I guess he is.) LOL. After he commented on my lack of enthusiasm about it, like 4 or 5 times, I finally said “Well, you didn’t watch Twilight with me, so why should I go look at a damned operating system I care nothing about”. His response? “That’s girl stuff.” Asshole.
June 26th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
He has the new beta version of Windows 7? SQUEEEEE!
You may have a chance. I used to be that guy. You may just have to wait 10 more years.
June 26th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Finally a normal hetero mans point of view!
I ditto the “did you find yourself sexually frustrated?” question. Cuz I don’t think that’s crossing any lines to ask you about your sex life on your wife’s blog.. Not at all. But damn if those books didn’t make the rest of us ladies horny as hell. And I think we all blamed it on RPatz/Edward. Do you blame it on KStew/Bella?
June 26th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Yeah, cause when I read I picture Kristen Stewart as Bella and it makes those scenes more arousing, but not sexually frustrating. And obviously, I don’t mind talking about my sex life on my wife’s blog. If you want to get more personal, just let me know.
June 26th, 2009 at 9:29 am
OME! Your hubby rocks! He should put on seminars ‘Sensitivity Training with Shag Daddy’ I would so sign my hubs up for that. I love that he admitted that “Twilight just reminds me of the way I felt about love and life when I was in high school”. We are twinners b/c that is exactly what I said! For serious! I am looking forward to more words of wisdom from the Unicorn in residence. BTW you totes owe him some “special hugs” for this!
June 26th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
You know, if I did put on seminars, it wouldn’t be sensitivity training. It’d be hey guys, suck it up. You don’t how much poo-nanny you are about to get.
June 26th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Wow! I’m impressed! What a man to take the time to read the books that his wife loves so much. Enjoying your blog on the book. Now I want more of his point of view!!
June 26th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Oh hell – do you think if we get him in touch with Hubz, yours could talk some sense into MINE?!
lol – mine puts up and supports my OCD, what with Kellan gifts and taking over at home so I can go to the conventions.
But yours? He’s LIVING it with you!! That is SO frickin’ awesome.
Props, girl. Major.
June 26th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Youo’ve got a keeper there.. I love your DH.. love im I tellyou.. please continue! Love your insight!
June 26th, 2009 at 11:46 am
Amber! I hope you dont mind but I love your husband:) I got my boyfriend to read the books but I don’t think he really gets it:(
Questions: Do you see yourself reading Twilight again?
Why are you not coming to Twicon??
June 26th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
I do see myself reading them again only because there won’t be more. I already find myself saying I need it. And I’m not going to Twicon because I am continuing my awesomeness by watching the kids so the wife can go.
