Study Geology in the United States. Geology is the study not only of the Earth but also the physical structure of the soil, the composition of the soil, and the various processes acting upon these materials, both in terms of people and in terms of the Earth’s climate. An important part of geography is the study of long-term changes that have taken place in the Earth’s surface, particularly over time. This study helps scientists to interpret the effects of such changes on the planet and the history of its development. The formation and function of tectonic plates; the movement and impact of tectonic plates; the formation and function of metamorphic superstructures; and the long-term effects of climate change are just some of the areas of study that geologists study.
Study Geology at home. Geologists depend on the Earth for a wealth of information about the physical processes taking place on its surface, including the climate, the living things that live on it, the mineral resources it has to offer, and the history of its development. A great number of earth scientists work from home–from university laboratories and schools to private offices and homes. Geologists use their knowledge to understand the Earth, to record its natural features, to plan for the future, to identify natural hazards, and to develop policies concerning natural resources.
Study Geology in school. Geography and the study of the Earth go back to the beginning of time. Through the written word, recorded history, and recorded images, humans have taken on a deep understanding of the forces that shape and influence the Earth’s surface. Today, nearly all of what geologists know about the Earth comes through the study of fossils. fossils provide a direct account of how life on Earth developed over time, how it began, how it evolved, and how it is changing today.
Study Geology in graduate studies. If you are an undergraduate student who wishes to major in earth and planetary science, you will need to take some coursework on study geology. Some of the typical graduate-level courses in earth and planetary sciences are Introduction to Geosciences, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Geographical Sciences, Environmental Biology, Earth Science, Mineralogy, Paleoecology, Stratigraphy, and Environmental Analysis. Some colleges or universities also require students to take a one-credit college-level course in the earth and planetary sciences as part of their application for admission to their graduate program. Many graduate schools, though, offer a variety of options for students who are interested in studying geology but do not meet the requirements for their undergraduate degree in this field.
Study Geology in high schools and colleges. If you are a high school student, you may be able to take classes on earth science and study geology during your first two years in high school. If you are planning on studying geology at a later date, you may want to consider enrolling in a program that allows you to participate in internships or hands-on studies in the field.
Study Geology at University or College. If you would like to study geology at a college or university, you will need to fulfill certain GPA requirements. You will also need to fulfill specific course requirements depending on whether you are a full-time, part-time, or online student. Many schools have partnerships with universities and colleges throughout the country that allow students to earn course credit through these programs. For example, several environmental science departments at colleges and universities participate in collaborations with the Department of Energy’s Office of Science and Technology for research opportunities related to climate change and energy. As an example, several college courses offer students the opportunity to participate in fieldwork at a National Park for a semester’s worth of experience.
